I’ve been writing and editing for more than 25 years, while also working in aged care, hospitality, the food industry (as a sensory researcher, product developer and production manager), in digital marketing (as a web author and copywriter), and in app development (as a conversation designer).

For several years I reviewed books for the Newcastle Herald. While completing my PhD I taught creative writing at the University of Newcastle and was a guest lecturer for UTS’s Masters of Arts in Creative Writing program. I’ve led writing workshops close to home at the Hunter Writers Centre in Newcastle, and further afield at Varuna, The National Writers’ House in Katoomba.

Even further afield (yet still closer to home . . . true home), in 2008 I was a guest writer and academic presenter at the 10th International Conference on the Short Story in English (ICSSE), which was held in Cork, Ireland. The Cove of Cork was from where my ancestor Cornelius, sentenced to be transported to the Colony of NSW for the term of his natural life, sailed aboard the Isabella in 1821. Also aboard the Isabella, in addition to the 200 male convicts, were the first European honeybees to be successfully acclimatised in Australia.
