About

Hi, I’m Patrick Cullen and I’m a writer.

Sounds like the kind of introduction you’d hear at a support group, doesn’t it?

But ‘writer’ does serve as a great catchall for what I do. It sure beats saying “Patrick Cullen is a short story writer, a playwright, a screenwriter, a copywriter, a web author, a blogger…truth be told, he’s also been a poet and, for many years, was a book reviewer for the Newcastle Herald.”

Yep, I write pretty much anything. I’ve also edited a bunch of things, from short stories for other writers (helping them make their own work better) to corporate policies (helping to make a CEO sound better).

My published writing includes a collection of short stories called What Came BetweenFive stories from What Came Between were published in Best Australian Stories between 2005 and 2007, and one of those was included in Best Australian Stories: Ten Year Collection.

I’ve written short film adaptations of some stories from What Came Between, and other short stories. My first play, The Closest Shave, was included in the top ten of Short + Sweet Newcastle 2011 (and the play was based on a short film adaptation of a short story I wrote).
